In the Wachowski brothers film ‘The Matrix’ there’s a key scene in the first third of the movie where Keanu Reeves character is offered two pills. If he takes the blue pill nothing changes for him and life will carry on as before. If he takes the red pill however he will learn the truth, the answer to the question: What is the matrix?
Blue Pill. Or Red Pill. It’s a decision that will change his life forever
What’s The Matrix Got To Do With Running An Online Business?
It’s to do with whether you want to take the red pill or the blue pill. The red pill represents the truth. And most people out there want to get their online businesses off the ground. Hell, if you asked them they’d probably say that they don’t just want to get their business off the ground, they want to be earning a 6 Figure annual income NOW.
Only the way that most people go about trying to get their business off the ground is the equivalent of taking the blue pill. They buy into some of the courses out there that proclaim: Overnight Traffic Stampede. Or: Ninja AutoBlogging On Steroids: Earn 6 Figures In 30 Days.
What Happens Once The 30 days Are Up?
What happens is this. They wake up on day 31, and they find that they’re maybe generated some income in those 30 days, but nothing like the thousands of dollars they were expecting to make. And so they do one of two things. They give up in frustration. Or they toss away the course that obviously doesn’t work and they go looking for another one.
Why Don’t These Courses Work?
Here’s a personal belief of mine: you can’t teach someone to create a business in 30 days. Or a week. There’s just no way that a business can evolve from scratch and start generating a serious income in that time frame.
Even if you could put in 10-hour days on that business – the time frame is still not enough for your online business to generate the promised returns. And let’s be ruthlessly honest, the kind of person who buys a ‘blue pill’ product is not going to be putting in 10 hours of hard work every single day. No, they want the 4-hour work week approach, or the ‘business on auto-pilot’ approach. Or the Business ATM approach.
And you know what, it doesn’t actually matter how good or bad these courses are – the kind of person who’s buying them isn’t buying the actual course, they are buying the touted result, which is often a dream. Usually this dream is ‘get rich quick.’ Sometimes it’s a variation of this – the ‘work a few hours at home, be your own boss’ dream.
So What’s The Alternative? What’s The Red Pill Approach?
The ‘red pill’ approach is simply this: the truth.
Here’s a quote from acoustic bass player and jazz educator Todd Coolman – but what he says relates to online business too. Indeed it relates to just about any endeavour in life. Coolman tells prospective students that if they’re going to succeed they need the following: ‘…a great work ethic, strong self-discipline, good training, the ability to network and luck.’
Personally I don’t agree with the luck part of the quote – the harder you work the luckier you’ll get. But there’s no getting around this: the truth’s kind of scary, right?
Here’s another piece of truth.
There’s no magic bullet that will shoot your online business to glory. If you know anyone who runs an online business and is doing well, you’ll almost certainly find that the secret of their success is simple.
It’s a combination of hard work over time.
That’s what you’ve got to do. Put in the hard yards on the days when you feel like crap, and you have knock backs, and nothing’s working. And having the ability to focus on your goal, and ignore the emails that appear in your inbox with headlines screaming: ‘I Earned $6496 In 7 Days – Here’s How.’
Hard work over time is the blue pill approach – yet most people getting into online business are looking for the red pill. At some stage you’ll have to sit back, assess your goals and make a decision:
Which Pill Will You Take – Blue Pill Or Red Pill?
If you want to make a success of your online business there’s only one way – hard work over time. Anything that appears and promises to be a short cut is almost certainly a ‘blue pill product.’ By all means watch the launch videos, monitor the pre-launch hype, listen to the forum chatter about these launches.
But then delete the emails and go back to your desk and put in a few more hard yards. That’s truly how you will grow your online business (and your income).
Take the Red Pill. Hard Work Over Time. It’s the surest way forward.
